The Seventh Principle:

It may be stated as follows: Much of what “revelation” establishes can also be known “through reason.” The Quran explains the evidence upon which reason relies, directs people to it, and draws attention to it, as Allah has mentioned in numerous places.

For He—Glorified and Exalted is He—has explained the signs that point to Him, His oneness, His power, His knowledge, and other matters, guiding His servants to these signs and directing them to them. He has likewise explained the evidence establishing the prophethood of His prophets, as well as the evidence establishing the resurrection and its possibility.

These matters are grounded in revelation in two respects:

• The Lawgiver has informed us of them, and He has explained the rational evidence by which they are established.

The examples presented in the Quran are “rational arguments”; this has been discussed at length elsewhere. These matters are also rational, since they can be known through reason as well. Many practitioners of speculative theology call these “rational principles,” because they believe that they
