Allah Most High also said in Sūrat al-Hajj:
“For every community We have appointed a rite, so that they may mention Allah’s name over the livestock He has provided for them.”
And:
“For every community We have appointed a rite which they observe, so let them not dispute with you concerning the matter.”
He also said within the surah:
“Monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which Allah’s name is frequently mentioned would surely have been demolished.”
He thus made clear that He Himself appointed the rites, and He mentioned the places of worship, just as He mentioned in Sūrat al-Baqarah the direction towards which they turn. In Sūrat al-Jāthiyah, after mentioning the Children of Israel, He said:
“Then We set you upon a prescribed way concerning the matter, so follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know”—to the end of the verse.
Concerning abrogation and their obligation to follow the Messenger, He said:
“And when Allah took the covenant of the prophets: ‘Whatever I give you of Scripture and wisdom’”—through to His words: “And I am with you among the witnesses.”
He also said:
“I shall decree it for those who fear Me and give zakah”—this verse and the one that follows it.
The passages in Sūrat al-Baqarah and Sūrat Āl ʿImrān commanding them to believe in what Allah revealed to Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, have already been discussed. The same is found in Sūrat al-Nisāʾ, and it occurs frequently throughout the Quran.
