And the disciples said:
“We believe in Allah, so bear witness that we are Muslims.”
And in the other surah:
“And bear witness that we are Muslims.”
Joseph, the man of truth, said:
“Cause me to die as a Muslim and join me with the righteous.”
Moses said:
“If you believe in Allah, then put your trust in Him, if you are Muslims.”
Bilqīs said:
“My Lord, I have wronged myself, and I submit with Solomon to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.”
And Allah said concerning the Torah:
“The prophets who submitted to Allah judged by it for the Jews, as did the devout scholars and rabbis.”
Shaykh al-Islām said:
Elsewhere, I have explained Islam in its general and specific senses, and faith in its general and specific senses, as in His words:
“Indeed, those who believe, the Jews, the Christians, and the Sabians—whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and does righteous deeds—will have their reward with their Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.”
As for the diversity and multiplicity of revealed laws, Allah, Exalted is He, mentioned the direction of prayer after mentioning the faith, saying:
“So turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. Wherever you are, turn your faces toward it. Those who were given the Scripture certainly know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do.”
Then, further on, He says:
“Each has a direction toward which he turns, so compete in doing good.”
He thus states that every community has a direction of prayer. He did not say, ‘We have appointed a direction of prayer for every community.’ Rather, they may have invented it themselves, just as the Christians invented the practice of facing east. This differs from what He says concerning religious law and prescribed paths, for He says:
“O Messenger, do not let those who hasten into disbelief grieve you.”
And so on, up to His words:
