the prophets: ‘Whatever Scripture and wisdom I have given you’”—up to His words:
“To Him submits whoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly.”
Thus He condemned those who seek a religion other than Allah’s, just as He said at the beginning of the surah:
“Allah bears witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, as do the angels and those endowed with knowledge. He upholds justice. There is no deity worthy of worship except Him, the Almighty, the All-Wise.”
“Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam. Those who were given the Scripture differed only after knowledge had come to them, out of mutual envy.”
He thus declared that the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam, and that those among the People of the Scripture who differed and divided into various religions differed only after knowledge had come to them. This makes clear that the religion is one, with no division within it.
He, Most High, also said:
“Say, ‘Indeed, my Lord has guided me to a straight path—an upright religion, the faith of Abraham, who inclined to the truth and was not one of those who associated others with Allah.’”
“Say, ‘Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of all worlds.’”
This comes after He mentioned the prophets and said:
“Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, so follow their guidance.”
In Surah al-Nahl, He mentioned the call of all the messengers and their agreement on worshipping Allah alone, without any partner, saying:
“We certainly sent a messenger to every nation, saying, ‘Worship Allah and shun false objects of worship.’”
—and so on to the end of the verse.
He also said:
“Indeed, Abraham was a model of righteousness, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining to the truth; he was not one of those who associated others with Allah.”
“He was grateful for His blessings. Allah chose him and guided him to a straight path.”
“We gave him good in this world, and in the Hereafter he will surely be among the righteous.”
