if all of them were presumed to have departed from that obedience, with even greater reason and necessity. Moreover, He said to them:

“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember Allah’s favour upon you: when you were enemies, He united your hearts, and by His favour you became brothers. You were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it.”

Since He forbade them from becoming divided without qualification, this indicates that they cannot agree upon falsehood. For if they agreed upon falsehood, following the truth would be obligatory, even though this would entail their division. He also explained that He united their hearts, so that by His favour they became brothers, as He said:

“It is He who supported you with His help and with the believers”

“and united their hearts. Had you spent all that is on earth, you could not have united their hearts, but Allah united them.”

Thus, when their hearts are united rather than divided over a matter, this is part of the fullness of Allah’s favour upon them and among the blessings He has bestowed on them. It therefore cannot be agreement upon falsehood, for Allah Most High knows all matters best.

إذَا قُدِّرَ خُرُوجُهُمْ كُلِّهِمْ عَنْهُ بِطَرِيقِ الْأَوْلَى وَالْأَحْرَى أَيْضًا فَقَدْ قَالَ لَهُمْ {وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا وَاذْكُرُوا نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إذْ كُنْتُمْ أَعْدَاءً فَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُمْ بِنِعْمَتِهِ إخْوَانًا وَكُنْتُمْ عَلَى شَفَا حُفْرَةٍ مِنَ النَّارِ فَأَنْقَذَكُمْ مِنْهَا} . فَلَمَّا نَهَاهُمْ عَنْ التَّفَرُّقِ مُطْلَقًا دَلَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى أَنَّهُمْ لَا يَجْتَمِعُونَ عَلَى بَاطِلٍ؛ إذْ لَوْ اجْتَمَعُوا عَلَى بَاطِلٍ لَوَجَبَ اتِّبَاعُ الْحَقِّ الْمُتَضَمِّنِ لِتَفَرُّقِهِمْ وَبَيَّنَ أَنَّهُ أَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَأَصْبَحُوا بِنِعْمَتِهِ إخْوَانًا كَمَا قَالَ: {هُوَ الَّذِي أَيَّدَكَ بِنَصْرِهِ وَبِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ} {وَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ لَوْ أَنْفَقْتَ مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا مَا أَلَّفْتَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ أَلَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْ} فَإِذَا كَانَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ مُتَأَلِّفَةٌ غَيْرَ مُخْتَلِفَةٍ عَلَى أَمْرٍ مِنْ الْأُمُورِ كَانَ ذَلِكَ مِنْ تَمَامِ نِعْمَةِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ؛ وَمِمَّا مَنَّ بِهِ عَلَيْهِمْ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ ذَلِكَ اجْتِمَاعًا عَلَى بَاطِلٍ؛ لِأَنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى أَعْلَمُ بِجَمِيعِ الْأُمُورِ. انْتَهَى وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ.
