Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

There are many hadiths from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, concerning the obligation to follow the Book and the obligation to follow his Sunnah, such as his saying:

“Let me not find any of you reclining on his couch when a directive of mine reaches him concerning something I have commanded or forbidden, saying, ‘Let this Quran decide between us and you: whatever we find lawful in it, we deem lawful, and whatever we find forbidden in it, we deem forbidden.’ Indeed, I have been given the Book and something like it along with it. Indeed, it is like the Quran, or greater.”

This hadith is transmitted from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, through several routes in the Sunan and Musnad collections, including the reports of Abū Thaʿlabah, Abū Rāfiʿ, Abū Hurayrah, and others.

In Sahīh Muslim, Jābir reports that he said in his Farewell Sermon:

“I have left among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray thereafter: the Book of Allah Most High.”

It is also reported in the Sahīh that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā was asked, “Did the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, leave a will?”

He replied, “No.”

He was asked, “Then how was making a will prescribed for people?”

He replied, “He enjoined adherence to the Book of Allah.”

The Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, explains the Quran. Thus, it explains the number of prayers, the amount to be recited in them, and audible and quiet recitation. It likewise explains the prescribed amounts of zakat and its minimum thresholds, as well as the pilgrimage rites and the prescribed numbers for circumambulating the House, going between Safā and Marwah, casting pebbles at the pillars, and similar matters. When this Sunnah is established as authentic, all Muslims agree on the obligation of
