It is permissible to write passages from Allah’s Book and words of remembrance of Him in lawful ink for an afflicted person or other sick people, then wash off the writing and give the resulting water to the patient to drink. Ahmad and others explicitly permitted this.

‘Abd Allāh ibn Ahmad said:

I read to my father: Ya‘lā ibn ‘Ubayd narrated to us, from Sufyān, from Muhammad ibn Abī Laylā, from al-Hakam, from Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbās, who said:

“If a woman has difficulty giving birth, the following should be written:

‘In the name of Allah. There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds.’

‘On the Day they see it, it will be as though they had remained only an evening or its morning.’

‘On the Day they see what they are promised, it will be as though they had remained only an hour of a day. This is a proclamation. Will any be destroyed except the defiantly disobedient people?’”

My father said: “Aswad ibn ‘Āmir narrated a report with the same meaning through his chain of transmission, adding: ‘It is to be written in a clean vessel, and the resulting water given to drink.’”

My father said: “Wakī‘ added to it: ‘She is given it to drink, and the area below her navel is sprinkled with it.’”

‘Abd Allāh said: “I saw my father write for a woman in a bowl or some other clean vessel.”
