the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, three things that no one before me has seen and no one after me will see. I once set out on a journey with him. Along the way, we passed a woman sitting with her young son. She said, “O Messenger of Allah, this boy has been afflicted, and his affliction has brought suffering upon us. He is seized by fits I do not know how many times a day.”
‘He said, “Hand him to me.” She lifted him up to him, and he placed him between himself and the pommel of his saddle. Then he opened the boy’s mouth, blew into it three times, and said, “In the name of Allah. I am the servant of Allah. Begone, enemy of Allah!” Then he handed him back to her and said, “Meet us here on our return and tell us how he has fared.”
‘We went on our way and returned to find her in that same place with three sheep. He asked, “How has your boy fared?”
‘She replied, “By the One who sent you with the truth, we have noticed nothing of his affliction up to this very moment. Take these sheep with you.”
‘He said, “Dismount, take one of them, and return the rest.”’” He related the hadith in full.
Wakīʿ narrated to us, saying: Al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr, from Yaʿlā ibn Murrah, from his father. Wakīʿ said “Murrah,” meaning al-Thaqafī, and did not say “Murrah, from his father”:
“A woman came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with a young son of hers who was afflicted with madness. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Come out, enemy of Allah! I am the Messenger of Allah.’
“He said: The boy recovered, and she gave him two rams, some dried curds, and some clarified butter. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Take the dried curds and clarified butter, take one of the two rams, and return the other to her.’”
