morning.’ So I let him go. The next morning, Allah’s Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked me, ‘What happened to your captive last night?’

“I replied, ‘O Messenger of Allah, he claimed that he would teach me words through which Allah would benefit me, so I let him go.’ He asked, ‘What are they?’

“I replied, ‘He told me, “When you go to bed, recite the Verse of the Throne from beginning to end: ‘Allah—there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence.’” He also told me, “A guardian from Allah will remain over you, and no devil will come near you until morning.”’ They were exceedingly eager for good. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘He has indeed told you the truth, though he is a habitual liar. Do you know whom you have been speaking to for the past three nights, Abū Hurayrah?’ I replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘That was a devil.’”

Furthermore, countless people have found through experience that its effects in repelling devils and nullifying their workings are beyond measure in both number and power. It has a tremendous effect in driving the devil away from a person, from someone possessed, and from those whom devils assist—such as people given to oppression and anger, those given to lust and revelry, and those who engage in listening sessions involving whistling and clapping. When it is recited over them with sincerity, it drives the devils away, and the illusions the devil conjures are dispelled. The satanic unveilings and powers possessed by the devils’ brethren are likewise nullified, for devils communicate to their allies things that the ignorant suppose to be miraculous gifts granted to Allah’s allies
