Likewise, blood contains the soul’s powers of desire and anger; consuming it increases one’s desire and anger beyond moderation. For this reason, only blood poured out has been forbidden, unlike small amounts, which cause no harm. Pork gives rise to all manner of vile traits, since the pig, more than any other animal, eats everything and shuns nothing. Allah has not forbidden the community of Muhammad anything wholesome; He imposed such prohibitions only on the People of the Book, as He, Most High, says:

“For wrongdoing on the part of the Jews, We made unlawful to them certain wholesome foods which had been lawful to them.”

And He, Most High, says:

“To the Jews We forbade every animal with an undivided hoof; and of cattle and sheep We forbade them their fat, except what adheres to their backs or entrails, or is mixed with bone. Thus We recompensed them for their transgression, and indeed, We are truthful.”

As for Muslims, He has forbidden them only unwholesome things, such as blood poured out. Blood that has not been poured out, such as that remaining in the veins, He has not forbidden. Indeed, ʿĀ’ishah related that they would put meat in the pot and see traces of blood in it. For this reason, the majority of jurists excused small amounts of blood on the body and clothing, provided it was not blood poured out. If it is excused in food, there is all the more reason to excuse its presence on clothing or in what one carries. Likewise, a dog’s saliva on hunted game is excused according to the majority of scholars, which is
