The point here is that all Muslim groups acknowledge the existence of the jinn, as do most unbelievers: the People of the Book in general, the Arab polytheists in general, and others among the descendants of al-Hudhayl, the Indians, and other descendants of Ham, as well as most Canaanites, Greeks, and other descendants of Japheth.

Thus, the great majority of religious communities acknowledge the existence of the jinn. Indeed, they also acknowledge the incantations and talismanic formulas by which they enlist the jinn’s assistance, whether these are permissible according to the believers or constitute polytheism. Polytheists recite incantations, talismanic formulas, and healing recitations that involve worshipping and venerating the jinn. Most of the incantations, talismanic formulas, and healing recitations in circulation whose meaning cannot be understood in Arabic contain elements of associating the jinn with Allah in worship. Muslim scholars have therefore forbidden healing recitations whose meaning is not understood, because they are liable to contain polytheism, even if the person reciting them does not recognize it as such.

In Sahīh Muslim, Awf ibn Mālik al-Ashja'ī reported:

“We used to perform healing recitations during the pre-Islamic period, so we asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of this?’ He replied, ‘Present your healing recitations to me. There is nothing wrong with healing recitations so long as they contain no polytheism.’”

Also in Sahīh Muslim, Jābir reported:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade healing recitations. The family of Amr ibn Hazm then came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we have a healing recitation that we use for scorpion stings, but you have forbidden healing recitations.’ They presented it to him, and he said, ‘I see nothing wrong with it. Whoever among you can benefit his brother should do so.’”
