Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Another example is his statement in the year of Khaybar:

“Tomorrow I shall give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love. Allah will grant victory through him.”

‘Alī had remained behind in Medina because he was suffering from sore eyes. He then caught up with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. When morning came, ‘Alī arrived, and he gave him the banner; eventually Allah granted victory through him.

“When he set out on the expedition to Tabūk with all the people, allowing only those with valid excuses to remain behind, he appointed ‘Alī to oversee Medina in his absence. Some hypocrites disparaged ‘Alī, so he caught up with him, weeping, and said, ‘Are you leaving me behind with the women and children?’ He replied, ‘Are you not content to stand in relation to me as Aaron stood in relation to Moses, except that there is no prophet after me?’ He also wrapped his cloak around ‘Alī, Fātimah, Hasan and Husayn, saying, ‘O Allah, these are the members of my household. Remove impurity from them and purify them completely.’”

“When he intended to engage in a mutual invocation of Allah’s curse with the people of Najrān, he took ‘Alī, Fātimah, Hasan and Husayn and went out with them to do so.”

“When ‘Alī, Ja‘far and Zayd disputed over the custody of Hamzah’s daughter, he awarded custody to her maternal aunt, who was married to Ja‘far. He said to Ja‘far, ‘You resemble me in appearance and character.’ He said to ‘Alī, ‘You are of me, and I am of you.’ And he said to Zayd, ‘You are our brother and our freedman.’”

He likewise said:

“When the people of the Ash‘arī tribe run short of provisions while travelling, or their households in Medina have little food, they gather whatever they have in a single cloth and then divide it equally among themselves. They are of me, and I am of them.”

And he said:

“Every community has a trusted man, and the trusted man of this community is Abū ‘Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrāh.”
