Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

He was asked:

“Regarding the account of Iblīs speaking to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, while he was in the mosque with a group of his Companions, and the Prophet questioning him about many matters while the people plainly saw his form and heard him speaking aloud: is this an authentic hadith or a fabricated lie? Does it appear in any of the Sahīh, Musnad, or Sunan collections? Is it permissible for anyone to narrate it? What should be done about someone who narrates it to people and claims that it is authentic and religiously authoritative?”

He replied:

Praise be to Allah. Rather, this is a fabricated lie. It is not found in any of the Muslims’ authoritative hadith collections—neither the Sahīh collections, nor the Sunan collections, nor the Musnad collections.

Anyone who knows that it is a lie attributed to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is not permitted to narrate it from him. Anyone who claims that it is authentic is to be informed of its true status; if he persists, he is to be punished for that.

However, it contains much material compiled from prophetic hadiths. The person who fabricated and invented it assembled it from reports, some false and some true. This is why it contains several authentic statements, even though the underlying account—Iblīs appearing visibly before the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in the presence of his Companions, and the Prophet questioning him—is a fabricated lie that none of the Muslim scholars has transmitted. And Allah, glorified and exalted is He, knows best.
