He was asked about the meaning of the Prophet’s saying, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
“Whoever rebukes an adherent of religious innovation, Allah will fill his heart with security and faith and grant him safety on the Day of the Greatest Terror.”
He replied:
As for the sayings, “Whoever rebukes an adherent of religious innovation, Allah will fill his heart with security and faith,” and “Whoever honors an adherent of religious innovation helps to destroy Islam,” and similar statements, these words are known to have been said by al-Fudayl ibn ‘Iyād.
Religious innovation consists of beliefs and acts of worship that contradict the Book and the Sunnah or the consensus of the early generations of the Muslim community. Examples include the doctrines of the Khawārij, Rāfidah, Qadariyyah and Jahmiyyah; the practices of those who worship through dancing and singing in mosques, or through shaving their beards and consuming hashish; and similar innovations adopted as acts of worship by groups that oppose the Book and the Sunnah. And Allah knows best.
