It is reported in a hadith:
“The greatest major sins are disbelief and arrogance.”
This is true, for these two sins underlie every sin committed by humans and jinn. Iblīs was the first to commit them, and he is their source.
Allah Most High said:
“Except Iblīs, who refused and was arrogant, and became one of the disbelievers.”
And He said:
“Except Iblīs, who was arrogant and became one of the disbelievers.”
In Sahīh Muslim, Ibn Masʿūd reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“No one with an atom’s weight of faith in his heart will enter the Fire, and no one with an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.”
He thus made arrogance the opposite of faith. The same applies to associating partners with Allah, as in His words:
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him.”
Ibn Masʿūd said that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Whoever dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise.”
He added: “And I say: Whoever dies while associating anything with Allah will enter the Fire.”
