The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, linked restraint with self-sufficiency in several hadiths. Among them is his statement in the hadith of Abū Sa‘īd recorded in the two Sahīhs:

“Whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient; and whoever seeks to refrain from begging, Allah will enable him to refrain.”

Another is his statement in the hadith of ‘Iyād ibn Himār in Sahīh Muslim:

“The people of Paradise are of three kinds: a just ruler, and a self-sufficient man who exercises restraint and gives charity.”

Another is his statement in the hadith about horses recorded in the Sahīh:

“And a man who keeps them to secure his livelihood and avoid begging, without forgetting Allah’s due concerning their necks and backs: they are a protection for him.”

Another is the report narrated from him:

“Whoever seeks wealth to be independent of others and refrain from begging will meet Allah with his face like the moon on the night when it is full.”

Another is his statement in the hadith of ‘Umar and others:

“Whatever comes to you of this wealth without your asking for it or eagerly desiring it, accept it.”

The one who asks does so with his tongue, unlike the one who refrains from begging. The one who eagerly desires does so in his heart, and this is contrary to self-sufficiency.

He said concerning the poor:

“Those unaware of their condition think them wealthy because of their restraint.”

وَقَالَ شَيْخُ الْإِسْلَامِ: فَصْلٌ: جَمَعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْنَ الْعِفَّةِ وَالْغِنَى فِي عِدَّةِ أَحَادِيثَ مِنْهَا قَوْلُهُ فِي حَدِيث أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمُخَرَّجُ فِي الصَّحِيحَيْنِ: {مَنْ يَسْتَغْنِ يُغْنِهِ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْ يُعِفَّهُ اللَّهُ} وَمِنْهَا قَوْلُهُ فِي حَدِيثِ عِيَاضِ بْنِ حِمَارٍ فِي صَحِيحِ مُسْلِمٍ: {أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ ثَلَاثَةٌ: ذُو سُلْطَانٍ مُقْسِطٌ وَرَجُلٌ غَنِيٌّ عَفِيفٌ مُتَصَدِّقٌ} وَمِنْهَا قَوْلُهُ فِي حَدِيثِ الْخَيْلِ الَّذِي فِي الصَّحِيحِ: {وَرَجُلٌ ارْتَبَطَهَا تَغَنِّيًا وَتَعَفُّفًا. وَلَمْ يَنْسَ حَقَّ اللَّهَ فِي رِقَابِهَا وَظُهُورِهَا فَهِيَ لَهُ سِتْرٌ} وَمِنْهَا مَا رُوِيَ عَنْهُ: {مَنْ طَلَبَ الْمَالَ اسْتِغْنَاءً عَنْ النَّاسِ وَاسْتِعْفَافًا عَنْ الْمَسْأَلَةِ لَقِيَ اللَّهَ وَوَجْهُهُ كَالْقَمَرِ لَيْلَةَ الْبَدْرِ} . وَمِنْهَا قَوْلُهُ فِي حَدِيثِ عُمَرَ وَغَيْرِهِ: {مَا أَتَاك مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ وَأَنْتَ غَيْرُ سَائِلٍ وَلَا مُشْرِفٍ فَخُذْهُ} فَالسَّائِلُ بِلِسَانِهِ وَهُوَ ضِدُّ الْمُتَعَفِّفِ وَالْمُشْرِفُ بِقَلْبِهِ وَهُوَ ضِدُّ الْغِنَى. قَالَ فِي حَقِّ الْفُقَرَاءِ: {يَحْسَبُهُمُ الْجَاهِلُ أَغْنِيَاءَ مِنَ التَّعَفُّفِ}
