Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

“Lowly are those who love; even their graves
Bear the dust of abasement among the tombs.”

That is, they are humble and submissive, for love brings submission. Worship of Allah combines perfect love for Him with perfect submission to Him. Whoever loves something without submitting to it is not its worshipper; nor is someone who submits to it while hating it.

Love has degrees. The highest is tatayyum (enslavement by love), which is worshipful devotion. The expression tayyama Allāha means “he worshipped Allah.” Allah Most High says:

“The servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth humbly, and when the ignorant address them, they say, ‘Peace.’”

And likewise in the verses that follow. The evidence supporting this principle is abundant.
