Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

And when he stated that each person would have what he intended, he explained that one would have what he intended, and the other would have what he intended.

The word hijra (migration) derives from hajr (abandonment). It is authentically reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“The migrant is one who abandons what Allah has forbidden, and the one who strives in Allah’s cause is one who strives against his own self for Allah’s sake.”

Likewise, he said:

“The Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand Muslims are safe, and the believer is one whom people trust with their lives and property.”

Here he explains what it means to fulfil this designation completely, as when he said:

“The truly needy person is not this one who goes around begging,”

and so on. This may resemble his saying:

“Whom do you consider bankrupt among you?”

They replied, “Someone who has neither a dirham nor a dinar.”

He said, “That is not the bankrupt person. Rather, the bankrupt person is someone who comes on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like mountains, but who has struck this person, insulted that person, and taken another’s property. This person is then given some of his good deeds, and that person some of his good deeds. When he has no good deeds left, some of their sins are taken and cast upon him; then he is cast into the Fire.”

He also said:

“Whom do you consider childless among you?”

They replied, “Someone who has no children.”

He said, “The childless person is one who has not had any of his children precede him in death.”

Similar to this is his saying:

“The strong person is not the one who overpowers others in wrestling; rather, the strong person is one who controls himself when angry.”

These hadiths, however, have a particular purpose: to explain what is more deserving of designations of praise and blame than the things people suppose. Bankruptcy entails need, which is something disliked. He therefore explained that true need is that experienced on the Day of Resurrection. Likewise, people dislike being without children because they lack a child who can benefit them. He therefore explained that true benefit from one’s children is only attained in the Hereafter, by one who
