Unays, travelling for a month until he heard it directly from him—a hadith narrated by Imam Ahmad and others, cited as supporting evidence by al-Bukhārī in his Sahīh, and comparable to al-Tirmidhī’s authentic or sound hadiths—it states:
“On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will gather all creatures on a single plain, where the caller will be heard by them all and they will all be within sight. Then He will call to them in a voice heard by those far away just as it is heard by those nearby: ‘I am the King; I am the Judge. No one destined for Paradise may enter Paradise while anyone destined for Hell has an outstanding claim against him. Nor may anyone destined for Hell enter Hell while anyone destined for Paradise has a claim against him, until I have exacted retribution from him.’”
The hadith thus explains the justice and retribution between the people of Paradise and the people of Hell. In Sahīh Muslim, Abū Sa‘īd narrates:
“When the people of Paradise have crossed the Bridge, they will stop on a bridge between Paradise and Hell, where their claims against one another will be settled. Once they have been refined and purified, they will be permitted to enter Paradise.”
After saying, “And do not backbite one another”—backbiting being a wrong against people’s honour—Allah, Glorified is He, says:
“Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is ever Accepting of repentance, Most Merciful.”
He thus calls their attention to repentance from backbiting, which is a form of wrongdoing. An authentic hadith states:
“Whoever has wronged his brother in his blood, property, or honour should go to him and seek his pardon before a day comes when there will be no dirham
