The Fifth Principle:
We know what we have been told in one respect, but not in another.
For Allah says:
“Do they not reflect upon the Quran? Had it been from anyone other than Allah, they would have found in it much inconsistency.”
And He says:
“Have they not reflected upon the Word?”
And He says:
“This is a blessed Book which We have sent down to you, so that they may reflect upon its verses and those of understanding may take heed.”
And He says:
“Do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?”
Thus, He commands reflection upon the entire Book. Allah Most High also says:
“He is the One who has sent down to you the Book. In it are clear verses, which are the foundation of the Book, and others that are not entirely clear. Those whose hearts are inclined to deviation follow what is not entirely clear in it, seeking discord and seeking its interpretation. But none knows its interpretation except Allah. Those firmly grounded in knowledge say, ‘We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord.’ And none take heed except those of understanding.”
The majority of the early and later generations of the Muslim community hold that the pause comes at His words:
“But none knows its interpretation except Allah.”
This is what has been transmitted from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, Ibn Masʿūd, Ibn ʿAbbās, and others.
