The Fourth Principle
Many people imagine that some, many, most, or all of Allah’s attributes resemble the attributes of created beings. They then seek to deny what they have understood, thereby falling into four pitfalls:
First: They have likened what they understood from the texts to the attributes of created beings and assumed that the texts signify such a likeness.
Second: If they take this to be the meaning of the texts and reject it, the texts are left stripped of what they signify: the affirmation of attributes befitting Allah. Thus, besides their offense against the texts and their ill opinion of Allah and His Messenger—since they suppose that their words convey this false likeness—they have negated what Allah and His Messenger placed in their words: the affirmation of Allah’s attributes and the divine meanings befitting the majesty of Allah Most High.
Third: They deny these attributes of Allah—Mighty and Majestic—without knowledge, thereby denying the Lord what rightfully belongs to Him.
