in Ramadan of 452 AH: Abū Bakr Ahmad ibn Ja‘far ibn Hamdān ibn Mālik al-Qatī‘ī informed us, as it was read to him while I was present and listening: Abū Alī Bishr ibn Mūsā ibn Sālih al-Asadī narrated to us: Abū Nu‘aym narrated to us: al-A‘mash narrated to us, from Shaqīq ibn Salamah, who said:
Abd Allāh, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “When we prayed behind the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, we would say: ‘Peace be upon Allah rather than upon Allah’s servants. Peace be upon Gabriel and Michael. Peace be upon so-and-so and so-and-so.’
“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, turned towards us and said: ‘Allah Himself is the Source of Peace. When any of you prays, let him say: All greetings, prayers, and good things belong to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s righteous servants. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.’”
Al-Bukhārī related it, and Muslim related it from Ibn al-Muthannā, from Ghundar, from Shu‘bah, from Mansūr—both through Shaqīq. He was born in 599 AH and died in Safar of 685 AH.
