Hazār Mard al-Sarīfīnī informed us, as it was read to him: Abū Tāhir Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahmān ibn al-Abbās al-Mukhlis narrated to us by dictation in Sha‘bān, 393 AH: Abū al-Qāsim Abd Allāh ibn Muhammad ibn al-Baghawī narrated to us: Shaybān ibn Farrūkh narrated to us: Mubārak ibn Fadāla narrated to us: al-Hasan narrated to us, from Anas, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to deliver the Friday sermon beside a wooden post, resting his back against it. When the people grew more numerous, he said, ‘Build me a pulpit with two steps.’ When he stood on the pulpit to deliver the sermon, the wooden post cried out in longing for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
Anas said: ‘I was in the mosque and heard the wooden post crying like one distraught with longing. It continued crying until he came down to it and embraced it; then it fell silent.’
Whenever al-Hasan related this hadith, he would weep and then say: ‘O servants of Allah! This wooden post cries out in longing for the Messenger of Allah because of his standing with Allah, Mighty and Majestic. You have even greater reason to yearn to meet him.’”
He was born in 587 AH and died in Dhū al-Qa‘da, 699 AH.
