In refuting some leading scholars of speculative theology who criticized later scholars of hadith, disparaging their limited understanding, claiming that they neither understood the meanings of hadith nor distinguished sound reports from weak ones, and boasting of their own expertise and the subtlety of their learning, he—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—said:

“There is no doubt that this is true of some of them. They cite fabricated hadiths as evidence in matters of religious fundamentals and subsidiary rulings, along with invented reports and unreliable accounts. They quote passages from the Quran and hadith whose meaning they do not understand. I have witnessed astonishing examples of this.

“Yet in this respect their position relative to others is like that of Muslims relative to the followers of other religions. Every evil found among some Muslims is more prevalent among others, and every good found among others is greater among Muslims. The same is true of the scholars of hadith in relation to others. While those scholars discuss hadiths whose meanings they do not understand, these theologians venture into speaking without knowledge to a far greater extent and with far graver consequences. How excellent are the words of Imam Ahmad: ‘A weak hadith is better than personal opinion.’ Shaykh Abū ‘Amr ibn al-Salāh ordered that a well-known school be taken away

(*) Shaykh Nāsir ibn Hamad al-Fahd said (p. 142): This treatise is pieced together—with abridgment—from the shaykh’s book Naqd al-mantiq (Refutation of Logic), may Allah have mercy on him. Its contents appear in the Fatāwā as follows: 1. Part One of Naqd al-mantiq: 4/1–190. 2. Part Two of Naqd al-mantiq: 9/5–82. I shall reproduce the treatise below, referring each passage to its source. The shaykh—may Allah grant him success—then reproduced the treatise, identifying the source of each passage in the footnotes. Here I shall confine myself to reproducing his references, since reproducing the entire treatise is not feasible. The book should be consulted to read the treatise: - First passage: 4/24, from “There is no doubt that this is found among some of them: they cite fabricated hadiths as evidence…” to “…How excellent are Imam Ahmad’s words: ‘A weak hadith is better than personal opinion.’” - Second passage: 9/7, 8, from “Shaykh Abū ‘Amr ibn al-Salāh ordered that a well-known school be taken away…” to “…Their astonishing ignorance, injustice, lying, unbelief, hypocrisy, and misguidance are beyond what any account could encompass.” - Third passage: 4/45, 55, from “If this concerns obscure doctrines, it may be said that, in these matters, he…” to “…This constitutes apostasy from Islam by the consensus of Muslims, although he may have returned to Islam.” - Fourth passage: 9/28–30, from “Everything they prescribe concerning knowledge, actions, and moral conduct is insufficient…” to “…For this reason, He mentions the two together in such statements as: ‘Do not follow the desires of those who deny Our signs and those who do not believe in the Hereafter and equate others with their Lord.’” - Fifth passage: 9/31: “He has stated in more than one place that the message encompasses all the descendants of Adam.” - Sixth passage: 9/32: “These three foundations—tawhīd (affirming Allah’s oneness), belief in His messengers, and belief in the Last Day—are inseparably linked.” - Seventh passage: 9/from the end of p. 32 to p. 35, from “For this reason, He, glorified be He, said: ‘Thus We have appointed for every prophet an enemy: devils from humankind and jinn’…” to “…Allah has appointed a measure for everything.” - Eighth passage: 9/38–40, from “Although these people possess intelligence and acumen, and among them…” to “…and that they were mightier in themselves and in the traces they left on earth.” - Ninth passage: 9/41–42, from “He, glorified be He, said concerning the followers of these leaders—people of power and learning who opposed the messengers…” to “Thus He made clear that those who recite the Quran include believers and hypocrites.” - Tenth passage: 4/26, from “If the happiness of earlier and later generations lies in following the messengers…” to “…those who follow him most closely and conform to him most fully in knowledge and practice. Allah, glorified and exalted be He, knows best.”
