could distinguish what was false from what was not. It is reported that al-Thawrī used to accept reports from al-Kalbī while forbidding others to do so, and that he could tell the difference. Something similar may occur when someone knows a person well: when that person relates various things to him, he can distinguish what he has told truthfully from what he has lied about, through contextual indicators that cannot be precisely defined.

A report from a single narrator may be accompanied by indicators showing that he has spoken truthfully, or by indicators showing that he has lied (1).
