Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

in his heart: an affirmation of the truth and a promise of good.

Allah Most High has said:

“He is the One who bestows blessings upon you, and His angels pray for you, to bring you out of darkness into light.”

This shows that these blessings are a means of bringing them out of darkness into light. He has mentioned His bringing the believers out of darkness into light in several verses, such as His words:

“Allah is the Protector of those who believe. He brings them out of darkness into light. As for those who disbelieve, their protectors are false gods, who bring them out of light into darkness.”

He also said:

“He is the One who sends down clear revelations to His servant to bring you out of darkness into light.”

And He said:

“A Book We have revealed to you so that you may bring people out of darkness into light, by their Lord’s permission.”

It is stated in the hadith:

“Allah bestows blessings upon those who teach people what is good, and His angels pray for them.”

This is because, by teaching what is good, such a person brings people out of darkness into light, and the reward corresponds to the deed. Thus, the Messenger is the most deserving of these blessings in their fullest measure, as Allah Most High said:

“Indeed, Allah bestows blessings upon the Prophet, and His angels pray for him.”

Salāh (prayer) is supplication, whether conveyed through good words that imply supplication or expressed in an explicit supplicatory formula. The angels supplicate for the believers, as authentically reported from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

“The angels continue to pray for any one of you as long as he remains in his place of prayer, saying, ‘O Allah, forgive him; O Allah, have mercy on him,’ so long as he does not invalidate his ablution.”

He thus explained that their prayer consists of their saying, “O Allah, forgive him; O Allah, have mercy on him.” A transmitted report states:

“The Lord offers salāh, saying, ‘My mercy has preceded—or prevailed over—My anger.’”
