“And if Satan causes you to forget, then once you remember, do not sit with the wrongdoing people.”
Moses’ young attendant said:
“I forgot the fish, and none but Satan made me forget it.”
Allah Most High says:
“But Satan made him forget the remembrance of his lord.”
It is established in the two Sahīh collections that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“When the caller gives the call to prayer, Satan turns and flees, passing wind so that he cannot hear the call. When the call is over, he returns. When the call to begin the prayer is given, he flees again; when it is over, he returns and intrudes between a person and his own thoughts, saying, ‘Remember such-and-such; remember such-and-such,’ bringing up things he had not been thinking of, until the man no longer knows how many units he has prayed.”
Thus Satan reminded him of past matters about which he had spoken inwardly to himself—things already in his mind, whether his own actions or other matters. Through these distractions, the worshipper forgot how many units he had prayed and no longer knew their number. Forgetfulness displaced what he had been keeping in mind and occupied his mind with something else, until he forgot the first matter.
As for Satan’s telling him about the future through promises and vain hopes, an example is Allah’s statement:
“And Satan will say, when the matter has been decided, ‘Allah gave you a true promise. I too promised you, but I failed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you and you responded to me. So do not blame me; blame yourselves.’”
This verse contains both his command and his promise. Allah Most High also says:
“Whoever takes Satan as an ally instead of Allah has indeed suffered a manifest loss.”
“He makes them promises and fills them with vain hopes, but Satan promises them nothing but delusion.”
“Those people will have Hell as their refuge
