Buwayh. Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh, known as Mutayyan, the hadith master, and others said that it is actually the grave of al-Mughīra ibn Shuʿba, may Allah be pleased with him. ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, was buried in the governor’s palace in Kufa; Muʿāwiya was buried in the governor’s palace in Damascus; and ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀs was buried in the governor’s palace in Egypt. This was for fear that, if they were buried in open cemeteries, the renegade Khārijites would exhume their bodies. The Khārijites had pledged to kill all three: Ibn Muljam killed ʿAlī, and his accomplice wounded Muʿāwiya. As for ʿAmr, he had appointed a man named Khārija to take his place, and the Khārijite killed him instead. The killer said:

“I intended to kill ʿAmr, but Allah willed that it be Khārija.”

This became a proverb. The point is that this shrine was only established under the rule of the heretics—the rule of Banū ʿUbayd.

There was much ignorance and misguidance among them, and they gave extensive support to heretics and to people of innovation among the Muʿtazila and the Rāfida. Consequently, Islam was severely weakened during their time, and the Christians entered Syria. Banū ʿUbayd were heretics and hypocrites who had no interest in believing in Allah and His Messenger or in waging jihad in Allah’s cause. Rather, their aims were disbelief, associating partners with Allah, and opposing Islam as far as they could. All their followers were people of innovation and misguidance. Thus, during their rule, the Christians seized most of Syria. Then Allah raised up Sunni rulers such as Nūr al-Dīn, Salāh al-Dīn and his brothers, together with their followers. They reconquered the Muslim lands and waged jihad against the disbelievers and hypocrites.
