“Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Quran,”
and His words:
“Then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah,”
and His words:
“When he came to it, he was called: ‘Blessed is whoever is in the fire and whoever is around it,’”
and His words:
“Are they waiting for anything but that Allah should come to them in canopies of clouds, along with the angels?”
and His words:
“And your Lord comes, and the angels, rank upon rank,”
and His words:
“Are they waiting for anything but that the angels should come to them, or your Lord should come, or some of your Lord’s signs should come?”
and His words:
“Then He turned towards the heaven while it was smoke,”
and His words:
“His command, when He wills something, is only to say to it, ‘Be,’ and it is,”
and other such verses.
Whoever claims that Gabriel and Muhammad—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon them both—the Companions, those who followed them in righteousness, the imams of the Muslims, and the community understood none of the meanings of these verses; that Allah alone possessed knowledge of their meanings, just as He alone knows the time of the Hour; and that they merely recited words whose meaning they did not understand, like someone reading speech of which he understands nothing—has falsely attributed this to them. The mass-transmitted reports from them establish the opposite: they understood these passages just as they understood the rest of the Quran.
Although His servants cannot encompass the true reality of the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, nor exhaust His praise, this does not prevent them from knowing whatever He, glorified and exalted, has taught them of His names and attributes. Likewise, knowing that He has knowledge of all things and power over all things does not require them to know the manner of His knowledge and power. And knowing that He truly exists does not require them to know the manner of His essence.
