then no one knows the meaning of most of the Quran—neither the Messenger nor anyone in the community. Clearly, this is a blatant denial of the obvious.
Moreover, it is well known that understanding the interpretation of dreams is more difficult than understanding the interpretation of spoken accounts. The way a dream points to its interpretation is subtle and obscure, beyond the grasp of most people, unlike the way words indicate their meaning. If Allah has taught His servants to interpret what they see in dreams, then all the more would He teach them the interpretation of the clear Arabic speech He reveals to His prophets. Jacob said to Joseph:
“Thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of dreams.”
Joseph said:
“My Lord, You have granted me authority and taught me the interpretation of dreams.”
He also said:
“No food will come to you as your provision but I will inform you of its interpretation before it reaches you.”
Furthermore, Allah has censured the disbelievers, saying:
“Or do they say, ‘He has fabricated it’? Say, ‘Then produce a surah like it, and call upon whomever you can besides Allah, if you are truthful.’”
“Rather, they have denied what they do not fully comprehend, and whose fulfilment has not yet come to them.”
He also said:
“And on the Day We gather from every nation a company of those who denied Our signs, they will be kept in order.”
“Until, when they arrive, He will say, ‘Did you deny My signs without fully comprehending them? Or what was it that you were doing?’”
This is a censure of anyone who denies what he does not fully comprehend.
