Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

And Shaykh al-Islām said:

Know—may Allah have mercy on you—that associating partners with Allah is the gravest sin of disobedience to Him. Allah Most High says:

“Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.”

It is recorded in the two Sahīh collections that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked, “Which sin is greatest?” He replied, “To set up a rival to Allah when He is the One who created you.” A rival is an equal. Allah Most High says:

“So do not set up rivals to Allah while you know.”

And He Most High says:

“He has set up rivals to Allah to lead others astray from His path. Say, ‘Enjoy your disbelief for a little while; you are indeed one of the inhabitants of the Fire.’”

Whoever makes any of Allah’s creatures His equal in the divinity and lordship that belong to Him, Mighty and Majestic, has disbelieved, by the consensus of the Muslim community. For Allah, glorified be He, deserves worship for His own sake: He is the God who is worshipped, whom hearts adore, to whom they turn in longing, and in whom they seek refuge in times of hardship. Everything besides Him is dependent and held in subjection as a servant. How, then, could it be fit to be a god?

Allah Most High says:

“They have made some of His servants a part of Him. Indeed, man is clearly ungrateful.”

And He Most High says:

“There is no one in the heavens and the earth who will not come to the Most Merciful as a servant.”

And Allah Most High says:

“The Messiah would never disdain to be a servant of Allah, nor would the angels brought near to Him.”

And He Most High says:

“Do not set up another god alongside Allah. Indeed, I am a clear warner to you from Him.”

And He Most High says:

“Say, ‘I have been commanded to worship Allah, sincerely devoting
