The point is that what he says about “Say: He is Allah, One” is better than what many people have said about it, and closer to the view we cited from Ibn Surayj and defended. Yet that view is undoubtedly correct, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stated that Allah divided the Quran into three parts, making “Say: He is Allah, One” one of those parts. This entails that the Quran as a whole consists of three parts, not six: three fundamental categories and three subsidiary ones.
Likewise, he stated that “Say: He is Allah, One” is equivalent to a third of the Quran. He did not say a third of its important content, of the greater part of it, or of its fundamental teachings. The entire Quran must therefore comprise three categories. According to Abū Hāmid’s account, however, it comprises six: three important categories and three supplementary ones, with this surah constituting one of the three important categories. This contradicts the hadith.
Moreover, dividing the Quran into three categories rests on a demonstrable basis: the Quran is speech, and speech is either informative or performative. Informative speech concerns either the Creator or creation. This is a clear division.
As for placing the science of jurisprudence outside the straight path and righteous action, and placing the science of proofs and arguments outside faith in and knowledge of Allah and the Last Day, this is rejected by the overwhelming majority of earlier and later scholars. Abū Hāmid only said this because he maintains that the meanings of these matters can be known solely through purification, not through prophetic reports or inferential reasoning.
