Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

that you will not leave through this door before you have learned it.” The report also states: “He asked, ‘How do you recite in prayer?’ I recited the Mother of the Quran to him, and he said, ‘By Him in Whose hand is my soul, nothing like it has been revealed in the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, or the Quran. It is the seven oft-repeated verses and the glorious Quran that I have been given.’” Mālik also narrated it in al-Muwatta’, from al-‘Alā’ ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān, from Abū Sa‘īd, the freedman of ‘Āmir ibn Kurayz, with an interrupted chain of transmission.

In Sahīh Muslim, ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Āmir said:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Have you not considered the verses revealed tonight, the like of which has never been seen: “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak” and “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind”?’”

Another wording reads:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to me, ‘Verses have been revealed to me, the like of which has never been seen: the two surahs of refuge.’”

In this authentic hadith, he stated that nothing like the two surahs of refuge had ever been seen, just as he stated that nothing like al-Fātihah had been revealed in the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, or the Quran. This demonstrates that some portions of the Quran are superior to others.

Section

As for the question about the meaning of this equivalence, given that all of it is equally the speech of Allah, this question encompasses two matters:

First: Are some portions of Allah’s speech superior to others, or not?

Second: What does it mean that “Say: He is Allah, the One” is equivalent to one-third of the Quran? And what is the reason for that?
