, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, ‘I shall recite to you one-third of the Quran.’ He then recited, ‘Say: He is Allah, the One; Allah, the Eternal Refuge,’ continuing to the end of the surah.”

As for the hadith concerning “The Earthquake” and “Say: O disbelievers,” al-Tirmidhī narrated from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Whoever recites “When the earth is shaken,” it is equivalent for him to half the Quran. Whoever recites “Say: O disbelievers,” it is equivalent for him to one-quarter of the Quran.’”

Ibn ‘Abbās said:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘“When the earth is shaken” is equivalent to half the Quran, and “Say: O disbelievers” is equivalent to one-quarter of the Quran.’”

Al-Tirmidhī narrated both reports and described each as singular.

As for the hadith concerning al-Fātihah, al-Bukhārī narrated in his Sahīh from Abū Sa‘īd ibn al-Mu‘allā, who said:

“I was praying in the mosque when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, called me, but I did not answer him. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I was praying.’ He said, ‘Has Allah not said, “Respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you”?’ Then he said, ‘I shall surely teach you a surah that is the greatest surah in the Quran.’ He said, ‘“All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds” is the seven oft-repeated verses and the glorious Quran.’”

In the Sunan and Musnad collections, al-‘Alā’ ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān narrated from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to Ubayy ibn Ka‘b:
