Surah al-Kawthar

Shaykh al-Islām Abū al-ʿAbbās Ahmad ibn ʿAbd al-Halīm ibn ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah have mercy on him—said:

“Surah al-Kawthar”

How magnificent this surah is, and how abundant its benefits despite its brevity! Its true meaning is understood from its ending. Allah, glorified and exalted is He, cuts off whoever hates His Messenger from every good. He cuts off his remembrance, his family, and his wealth, so that he loses these in the Hereafter. He cuts his life off from good, so that he neither benefits from it nor stores up righteous deeds during it for his return to Allah. He cuts his heart off from good, so that it cannot comprehend goodness, nor does He make it fit to know Him, love Him, and believe in His messengers. He cuts off his deeds, so that He does not employ him in any act of obedience. He cuts him off from supporters, so that he finds neither supporter nor helper.

He cuts him off from all acts of devotion and righteous deeds, so that he neither savours them nor finds any sweetness in them. Even if he performs them outwardly, his heart wanders away from them. This is the recompense of anyone who hates some of what the Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—brought and rejects it on account of his own desires, someone he follows, his shaykh, his ruler, or his superior. Such is the person who hates the verses and hadiths concerning Allah’s attributes and interprets them in a way other than that intended by Allah
