Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

The correct view, as indicated by the Quran and reason, is that His power extends to both. The Most High says:

“Yes, We are able even to restore his fingertips.”

He also says:

“Is He not able to give life to the dead?”

“Is not He who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them?”

“And We are certainly able to take it away.”

Such statements occur frequently in the Quran, more frequently than the other kind. What the Karrāmiyyah and Hishāmiyyah say is closer to reason and revelation than what the Jahmiyyah and those who agree with them say, although the position reported of them is mistaken insofar as they deny His power over things distinct from Him. Allah Most High has declared that He has power over all things.

It is related in the two Sahīh collections that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to Abū Mas‘ūd when he saw him beating his slave: “Allah has greater power over you than you have over this slave.”

And in the Quran:

“Even if We take you away, We will surely exact retribution from them.”

“Or if We show you what We have promised them, We certainly have full power over them.”

This is discussed at length elsewhere. Everything the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, has reported is necessarily true in reality. Every attribute he has affirmed of the Lord necessarily belongs to Him. If its absence is posited, the absence of that which entails it necessarily follows. Thus, denying what the Messenger has reported entails negation of the divine attributes. Yet some of this is evident through reason—though people differ in their rational capacities—and some of it
