and to endure it. Thus He sent him with knowledge, generosity, and forbearance—a knowledgeable guide, generous and benevolent, forbearing and forgiving. Allah, Exalted is He, says:

“And indeed, you guide to a straight path—the path of Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. Surely, to Allah all matters return.”

He, Exalted is He, also says:

“A Book We have sent down to you so that you may bring people out of darkness into light, by their Lord’s permission, to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.”

And He, Exalted is He, says:

“And thus We have revealed to you a spirit by Our command. You did not know what the Scripture was, nor faith, but We made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants.”

There are many similar passages. He also says:

“Say, ‘I ask you for no reward for it.’”

And He says:

“Say, ‘Whatever reward I may have asked of you is yours. My reward rests with Allah alone.’”

And He says:

“Say, ‘I ask you for no reward for it.’”

He thus possesses knowledge, gives guidance, reforms hearts, and directs them toward what will set them right in this world and the Hereafter, without seeking anything in return. This is the description of all the messengers; each says:

“I ask you for no reward for it.”

Hence the man mentioned in Surah Yā-Sīn said:

“O my people, follow the messengers. Follow those who ask you for no reward and are themselves rightly guided.”

This is also the path of those who follow him, as Allah says:

“Say, ‘This is my path: I call to Allah with clear insight—I and those who follow me.’”
