Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

“When Allah said, ‘O Jesus, son of Mary, remember My favour upon you and upon your mother.’”

And His statement:

“O Jesus, son of Mary, did you tell people, ‘Take me and my mother as two gods besides Allah’?”

And His statement:

“And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign.”

And His statement:

“And their saying, ‘We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.’”

There are two benefits in this. The first is to make clear that he was begotten, whereas Allah was not begotten. The second is to identify him as Mary’s son, not the son of Allah.

As for His statement:

“The Messiah would never disdain”—and the rest of the verse—and His statement:

“The Jews say, ‘Ezra is the son of Allah,’ and the Christians say, ‘The Messiah is the son of Allah,’”

He was reporting what they themselves said. They attributed him to Allah as His son, so they did not include in their statement the words “the Messiah, son of Mary.”

His statement:

“Nor is there anyone equal to Him”

negates partners and rivals. This encompasses anyone who makes something equal to Allah in any matter exclusive to lordship, such as bringing creation into existence, or to divinity, such as being worshipped, being invoked, and the like. These points demonstrate that the Book of Allah refutes the claims of anyone who believes that a human being is divine, whether through union, indwelling, or otherwise.
