which Muslim narrated from Abū Sa'īd al-Khudrī, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“As for the inhabitants of the Fire who truly belong there, they neither die therein nor live. But there are people whom the Fire afflicts because of their sins—or he said, their misdeeds—and causes to die. Once they have become charcoal, permission for intercession is granted, and they are brought in group after group and scattered along the rivers of Paradise. Then it is said, ‘O inhabitants of Paradise, pour water over them.’ They then sprout as a seed sprouts amid flood-borne debris.”

A man among those present remarked, “It is as though the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had lived in the desert.”

In another narration cited by Ibn Abī Hātim, he stated: It was related from 'Abd al-Samad ibn 'Abd al-Wārith, who said: My father narrated to us: Sulaymān al-Taymī narrated to us, from Abū Nadrah, from Abū Sa'īd, who reported:

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, delivered a sermon and came to this verse:

“Then neither die therein nor live.”

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“As for its inhabitants who truly belong there, they neither die therein nor live. But those who are not inhabitants of the Fire are caused to die by it. Then the intercessors will stand forth and be permitted to intercede for them, and they will intercede. They will then be brought to a river called al-Hayāh (Life), or al-Hayawān (Life), and will sprout as flood-borne seeds sprout amid the debris carried by a torrent.”

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, thus explained that this burning is for the inhabitants of the Fire who truly belong there. As for those who do not belong there, the Fire afflicts them because of their sins, and Allah causes them to die therein until they become charcoal. Then intercession is made for them, and they emerge and are brought
