Among the things they were commanded to remember are Allah’s signs, from which they infer His power and the resurrection, as in His words:

“Man says, ‘When I am dead, will I really be brought forth alive?’”

“Does man not remember that We created him before, when he was nothing?”

He also said to Moses:

“And remind them of the days of Allah.”

These encompass both the days of His blessings and the days of His punishments, so that they may give thanks and take heed. Hence He said:

“Indeed, in that are signs for everyone who is steadfast and grateful.”

Remembering blessings inspires gratitude, while remembering punishments calls for patiently doing what is commanded, even if the soul dislikes it, and refraining from what is forbidden, even if the soul desires it, lest one suffer the punishment that befell others.

Section

As for His words:

“But the most wretched will avoid it,”

“Who will burn in the greatest Fire,”

“Then neither die therein nor live.”

He also said in Sūrat al-Layl:

“So I have warned you of a blazing Fire,”

“None will burn in it except the most wretched,”

“Who denied and turned away.”
