among themselves,” are like His words:
“Remember Allah’s favour upon you and what He has sent down to you of the Book and wisdom.”
And His words:
“Just as We have sent among you a Messenger from yourselves, reciting Our verses to you, purifying you, teaching you the Book and wisdom, and teaching you what you did not know.”
Then He said:
“So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me, and do not be ungrateful to Me.”
The point is that He commanded people to remember His blessings and give thanks for them. In several places, He said:
“O Children of Israel, remember My favour which I bestowed upon you.”
And He said to the believers:
“And remember when you were few, and He increased your numbers.”
Remembering His blessings is thus part of the remembrance they were commanded to observe.
They were also commanded to recall the accounts of the earlier prophets, as He said:
“And mention Abraham in the Book.”
“And mention Moses in the Book.”
“And mention Ishmael in the Book.”
“And mention Idrīs in the Book.”
He also said:
“And remember Our servant David, a man of strength.”
“And remember Our servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”
“And remember Ishmael and Elisha.”
They were also commanded to remember the reward and punishment they had been promised. Allah Most High said:
“Indeed, We singled them out for a special quality: remembrance of the abode of the Hereafter.”
