Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

And likewise Moses said to him:

“Would you be willing to purify yourself, and let me guide you to your Lord, so that you may fear Him?”

Thus Moses brought the two together because they necessarily accompany one another.

Concerning the blind man, He said:

“How do you know? Perhaps he may purify himself, or take heed, and the reminder would benefit him.”

He thus mentioned benefiting from the reminder, just as He said:

“And remind, for the reminder benefits the believers.”

Benefit is of two kinds: receiving blessings and averting punishment. Averting punishment is itself a benefit, even if no other benefit accompanies it. Receiving benefits is itself a benefit, even when accompanied by fear of punishment; and having both is also a benefit. Thus benefit encompasses all three, and all three are attained through reminders, as the Most High said:

“And remind, for the reminder benefits the believers.”

And He said:

“How do you know? Perhaps he may purify himself, or take heed, and the reminder would benefit him.”

As for mentioning purification alongside taking heed, this parallels His mentioning fear alongside taking heed in the account of Pharaoh.

Purification means faith and righteous deeds through which a person’s soul becomes pure, as He said in this surah:

“Successful indeed is the one who purifies himself, remembers the name of his Lord, and prays.”

And He said:

“Successful indeed is the one who purifies it, and a failure is the one who corrupts it.”

وَكَذَلِكَ قَالَ لَهُ مُوسَى {هَلْ لَكَ إلَى أَنْ تَزَكَّى} {وَأَهْدِيَكَ إلَى رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَى} فَجَمَعَ مُوسَى: بَيْنَ الْأَمْرَيْنِ لِتَلَازُمِهِمَا. وَقَالَ فِي حَقِّ الْأَعْمَى: {وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّى} {أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنْفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَى} . فَذَكَرَ الِانْتِفَاعَ بِالذِّكْرَى كَمَا قَالَ {وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ الذِّكْرَى تَنْفَعُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} . وَالنَّفْعُ نَوْعَانِ: حُصُولُ النِّعْمَةِ وَانْدِفَاعُ النِّقْمَةِ. وَنَفْسُ انْدِفَاعِ النِّقْمَةِ نَفْعٌ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَحْصُلْ مَعَهُ نَفْعٌ آخَرُ وَنَفْسُ الْمَنَافِعِ الَّتِي يُخَافُ مَعَهَا عَذَابٌ نَفْعٌ وَكِلَاهُمَا نَفْعٌ. فَالنَّفْعُ تَدْخُلُ فِيهِ الثَّلَاثَةُ وَالثَّلَاثَةُ تَحْصُلُ بِالذِّكْرَى كَمَا قَالَ تَعَالَى: {وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ الذِّكْرَى تَنْفَعُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} وَقَالَ: {وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّى} {أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنْفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَى} . وَأَمَّا ذِكْرُ التَّزَكِّي مَعَ التَّذَكُّرِ فَهُوَ كَمَا ذَكَرَ فِي قِصَّةِ فِرْعَوْنَ الْخَشْيَةَ مَعَ التَّذَكُّرِ. وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ التَّزَكِّيَ هُوَ الْإِيمَانُ وَالْعَمَلُ الصَّالِحُ الَّذِي تَصِيرُ بِهِ نَفْسُ الْإِنْسَانِ زَكِيَّةً كَمَا قَالَ فِي هَذِهِ السُّورَةِ: {قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ تَزَكَّى} {وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّى} وَقَالَ {قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا} {وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ دَسَّاهَا}
