Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

And the Most High says in condemnation of the disbelievers:

“When it was said, ‘Allah’s promise is true, and there is no doubt about the Hour,’ you said, ‘We do not know what the Hour is. We are merely guessing and have no certainty.’”

He describes the God-fearing as having certainty in the Hereafter. This is why the Lord swears that the punishment and the Hour will come. He also commands His Prophet to swear that the Hour will come and that the Quran is true, saying:

“Those who disbelieve claim that they will never be resurrected. Say, ‘Yes, by my Lord, you will surely be resurrected.’”

He also says:

“Those who disbelieve say, ‘The Hour will never come upon us.’ Say, ‘Yes, by my Lord, it will surely come upon you.’”

And He says:

“They ask you, ‘Is it true?’ Say, ‘Yes, by my Lord, it is indeed true.’”

As for His saying, the Most High:

“None takes heed except one who turns to Him,”

it is true, just as He says. A person taking heed either recalls what leads to mercy, blessing, and reward—just as someone recalls what prompts him to ask—and thus turns to Allah; or he recalls what gives rise to fear and awe, in which case he must turn to Allah to escape what he fears. Hence it was said concerning Pharaoh:

“Perhaps he may take heed”—and thus turn to Allah—“or fear Him.”

وَقَالَ تَعَالَى فِي ذَمِّ الْكُفَّارِ: {وَإِذَا قِيلَ إنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَالسَّاعَةُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهَا قُلْتُمْ مَا نَدْرِي مَا السَّاعَةُ إنْ نَظُنُّ إلَّا ظَنًّا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُسْتَيْقِنِينَ} وَوَصَفَ الْمُتَّقِينَ بِأَنَّهُمْ بِالْآخِرَةِ يُوقِنُونَ. وَلِهَذَا أَقْسَمَ الرَّبُّ عَلَى وُقُوعِ الْعَذَابِ وَالسَّاعَةِ. وَأَمَرَ نَبِيَّهُ أَنْ يُقْسِمَ عَلَى وُقُوعِ السَّاعَةِ وَعَلَى أَنَّ الْقُرْآنَ حَقٌّ فَقَالَ: {زَعَمَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنْ لَنْ يُبْعَثُوا قُلْ بَلَى وَرَبِّي لَتُبْعَثُنَّ} وَقَالَ: {وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَا تَأْتِينَا السَّاعَةُ قُلْ بَلَى وَرَبِّي لَتَأْتِيَنَّكُمْ} وَقَالَ: {وَيَسْتَنْبِئُونَكَ أَحَقٌّ هُوَ قُلْ إي وَرَبِّي إنَّهُ لَحَقٌّ} . فَصْلٌ: وَأَمَّا قَوْله تَعَالَى {وَمَا يَتَذَكَّرُ إلَّا مَنْ يُنِيبُ} فَهُوَ حَقٌّ كَمَا قَالَ. فَإِنَّ الْمُتَذَكِّرَ إمَّا أَنْ يَتَذَكَّرَ مَا يَدْعُوا إلَى الرَّحْمَةِ وَالنِّعْمَةِ وَالثَّوَابِ كَمَا يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنْسَانُ مَا يَدْعُوهُ إلَى السُّؤَالِ فَيُنِيبُ وَإِمَّا أَنْ يَتَذَكَّرَ مَا يَقْتَضِي الْخَوْفَ وَالْخَشْيَةَ فَلَا بُدَّ لَهُ مِنْ الْإِنَابَةِ حِينَئِذٍ لِيَنْجُوَ مِمَّا يَخَافُ. وَلِهَذَا قِيلَ فِي فِرْعَوْنَ {لَعَلَّهُ يَتَذَكَّرُ} فَيُنِيبُ {أَوْ يَخْشَى}
