The reply is:
Rather, some reminders have brought no benefit at all: those that were not commanded. Such is the case with someone whom Allah has declared will not believe, such as Abū Lahab. After Allah revealed His words,
“He will burn in a Fire of blazing flame,”
he is not to be singled out for reminders; rather, the Prophet is to turn away from him. Likewise, he is to turn away from anyone who pays him no heed and does not listen to his words, as Allah said:
“So turn away from them; you are not to blame.”
Then He said:
“And remind, for the reminder benefits the believers.”
Thus, when he has conveyed the message to a people and the proof has been established against them, but they then refuse to listen to his words, he turns away from them. At that point, reminding them benefits no one. Likewise, when someone makes it plain that the proof has been established against him and that he will not accept guidance, the Prophet does not repeatedly convey the message to him.
The second point:
The command to remind calls for a full and beneficial reminder, just as it calls for the general reminder addressed to all. This full and beneficial reminder is specifically for the believers who benefit from it. Once they believe, he reminds them of what has been revealed. Whenever any part of the Quran is revealed, he reminds them of it, explains its meanings to them, and reminds them of what was revealed before.
This is unlike those of whom Allah said:
“What is the matter with them that they turn away from the reminder, as though they were
