that is, He guided the felicitous to the felicity He had decreed, and guided the wretched to the misery He had decreed.
Likewise, concerning His words, “Indeed, We guided him to the way,” Mujāhid said: “Felicity and misery.” ‘Ikrimah said: “The way of guidance.” ‘Abd ibn Humayd narrated both reports.
Similarly, Ibn Abī Hātim narrated that, concerning His words, “And We showed him the two ways,” Mujāhid said: “Misery and felicity.”
He and the great majority of the early generations also explained “And We showed him the two ways” as meaning good and evil. Ibn Abī Hātim narrated this from Ibn Mas‘ūd. He then said:
“A similar explanation was reported from ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib, Ibn ‘Abbās in one of … (1), Shaqīq ibn Salamah, Abū Sālih, Mujāhid, al-Hasan, Muhammad ibn Ka‘b, ‘Ikrimah, Shurahbīl ibn Sa‘īd, Ibn Sinān al-Rāzī, al-Dahhāk, ‘Atā’ al-Khurāsānī, and ‘Amr ibn Qays al-Mulā’ī. It was also reported that Muhammad ibn Ka‘b al-Qurazī said: ‘Truth and falsehood.’”
