one wall far above another, the structure would be spoiled. The roof beams must likewise be evenly fitted: if some fell short of the required length while others exceeded it, the work would be spoiled. Similarly, when one course of masonry is laid upon another, the courses must be level, as must the steps of a staircase. When channels and watercourses are made for irrigation, they too must be properly balanced and level. Likewise, clothes made for people must be measured to fit their bodies, neither too large nor too small. Food must also have its ingredients combined in balanced proportions, and the heat used to cook it must likewise be moderate. The same applies to the construction of ships.
This is why Allah said to David:
“And make the links of mail in due proportion.”
That is, do not make the rivet so thin that it fits loosely, nor so thick that it causes cracking; rather, make it the proper size. If this applies to what human beings make—which is itself part of what the Lord makes—then how much more does it apply to His mighty creations in whose making human beings have no part, such as the creation of man and all other animals, plants, the heavens and the earth, and the angels?
The celestial sphere, which He created and made round, has no gaps, as He, Most High, says:
“He who created seven heavens, one above another. You will see no inconsistency in the creation of the Most Merciful. Look again: do you see any cracks?”
“Then look again and again; your sight will return to you humbled and weary.”
And He, Most High, says:
“By the heaven of intricate design.”
And He says:
