Surah Qāf

He—may Allah have mercy on him—was asked about Allah’s words:

“On the Day We will say to Hell, ‘Are you full?’ and it will say, ‘Is there any more?’”

What is meant by “more”?

He replied:

It has been said that its words, “Is there any more?” mean: “There is no room in me for any more.”

The correct view, however, is that it says, “Is there any more?” as a request, meaning: “Is there anything more to be added to me?” What is meant by “more” is the jinn and humans whom Allah adds to it. As related in the two Sahīh collections, Abū Hurayrah reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“People will continue to be thrown into Hell while it says, ‘Is there any more?’ until the Lord of Might places His Foot in it—or, according to another narration, upon it—whereupon its parts draw together, and it says, ‘Enough, enough!’”

When it says, “I have enough! I have enough!” it will have been satisfied with what has been cast into it and will no longer say, “Is there any more?” Rather, it becomes full with what it contains because its parts draw together. Allah will constrict it around those within it because of its vastness, for He has promised it that He will fill it
