Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

to you, but We have placed coverings over their hearts so that they do not understand it, and deafness in their ears. Even if they see every sign, they will not believe in it. When they come to you, disputing with you, those who disbelieve say, ‘This is nothing but tales of the ancients.’”

Allah Most High also said:

“And among them are those who listen to you. But can you make the deaf hear, even though they do not understand?”

“And among them are those who look at you. But can you guide the blind, even though they do not see?”

“Indeed, Allah does not wrong people at all, but it is people who wrong themselves.”

Allah Most High also said:

“When you recite the Quran, We place a hidden barrier between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter.”

“And We place coverings over their hearts so that they do not understand it, and deafness in their ears. When you mention your Lord alone in the Quran, they turn their backs in aversion.”

“We know best how they listen when they listen to you, and when they converse in secret, as the wrongdoers say, ‘You follow none but a bewitched man.’”

Allah Most High also said:

“Who does greater wrong than one who is reminded of the signs of his Lord, then turns away from them and forgets what his own hands have sent forth? Indeed, We have placed coverings over their hearts so that they do not understand it, and deafness in their ears. Even if you call them to guidance, they will never be guided.”

His words, “so that they do not understand it,” encompass both those who do not understand the meaning of its wording as it can be understood through knowledge of Arabic alone, and those who understand that meaning but do not recognize the actual realities to which it refers: the “entities,” “actions,” and “attributes” intended by its commands and statements. They may see these realities without knowing that they are what the discourse denotes. For example, someone may know of a blameworthy quality and himself possess it, or something of the same kind, yet not realize that he falls within its scope.

Allah Most High also said:
