Moreover, if this holds for his marriage to the wife of an adopted son—a marriage previously believed to be forbidden—it applies all the more where no such doubt exists. Furthermore, this holds in marriage, a sphere in which he was granted permissions not shared by his community, such as marrying without a numerical limit and marrying a woman who offered herself to him without a dowry. Since He has explained that permitting him to contract this marriage establishes its permissibility for his community, this applies all the more to matters in which no special privilege comparable to those in marriage is evident. This indicates that everything else made lawful for him, including transactions, foods, clothing, and the like, is lawful for his community, except where evidence establishes an exception specific to him.

This principle is also supported, in two respects, by His words in the passage concerning what He made lawful for him:

“and a believing woman who offers herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet wishes to marry her—a privilege for you alone, not for the other believers. We know what We have prescribed for them regarding their wives and those whom their right hands possess, so that there may be no hardship for you.”

First: When He permitted him to marry a woman who offered herself to him, He said:

“a privilege for you alone, not for the other believers,”

to clarify that this was exclusive to him. It follows that wherever He makes no mention of exclusivity, the permission extends to his community. Otherwise, there would be no point in singling out this instance for an explicit statement of exclusivity.

Second: As for the wives, female slaves, and female relatives He made lawful for him,
