Shaykh al-Islām was asked about the words of Allah Most High:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what they do.”
“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not display their adornment except what is apparent”—to the end of the verse—and about the hadith of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, mentioning “the fornication of all the bodily organs.”
What ruling applies to a man who touches the hand of a beardless boy? Is this like touching women, in that it invalidates ablution, or not? What ruling applies to a man when beardless youths come to him and he reaches out his hand to this one and that one, taking pleasure in doing so? What has been related concerning the prohibition of looking at the face of a handsome beardless youth?
Is the following reported hadith authentic or not: “Looking at a beautiful face is an act of worship”?
If someone says, “I do not look at a handsome beardless youth for any particular purpose; rather, when I see him, I say: ‘Glory be to Allah! Blessed is Allah, the best of creators!’” is this statement correct or not? Give us a fatwa; may you be rewarded. (*)
He replied—may Allah sanctify his soul, illuminate his grave, have mercy on him, be pleased with him, grant benefit through his knowledge, and resurrect us in his company—:
(*) Shaykh Nāsir ibn Hamad al-Fahd stated (pp. 134–136):
There are two points here:
First: This fatwa is repeated verbatim at 21/243–259.
Second: Omissions and textual corruptions have occurred in several places here. These can be identified by comparison with the other occurrence. Examples include:
1 - P. 411: “did not take account of it in some instances of intercourse.” The correct wording is “in the context of intercourse,” as at 21/244.
2 - P. 412: “Just as it is forbidden to take pleasure in touching women permanently forbidden to one in marriage or a non-mahram woman, [indeed, most scholars hold that this (1) is more sinful than taking pleasure in a non-mahram woman], just as the majority…” The bracketed passage was omitted because the copyist’s eye skipped ahead. It appears at 21/245.
3 - P. 413: “or the desire for pleasure through looking, [so if he looked at his mother, sister, or daughter, taking pleasure in looking at her] as he takes pleasure in looking at the face of a non-mahram woman.” The bracketed passage is missing here but appears at 21/245.
4 - P. 413: “at the faces of [non-mahram] women.” The addition “non-mahram” appears to have been made by the compiler, may Allah have mercy on him, since it is enclosed in square brackets. It does not appear in the other occurrence.
5 - P. 414, line four: “assisting through procuring or otherwise.” The wording at 21/246 is “assisting in sexual immorality through procuring or otherwise.”
6 - P. 415: “Those forbidden things—meaning carrion, blood, and pork—if he consumes them while regarding them as lawful, he is liable to discretionary punishment.” The wording has been corrupted. The correct wording, as at 21/247, is “if he consumes them without regarding them as lawful.”
7 - P. 417: “But if it occurs in a manner that does not diminish religious commitment and merely provides relaxation, such as looking at flowers, then this belongs to the vain activity that does not help uphold the truth,” as at 21/249.
8 - P. 419: “The means leading to corruption: blocking it when no overriding benefit opposes doing so.” The correct wording is “…the means leading to corruption must be blocked,” as at 12/251.
9 - P. 422: “For devotion to these forms…” The wording at 21/254 is “and the subject of attachment to forms,” which is clearer.
10 - P. 424: “until this is lawful and that is unlawful” (hattā yakūna hādhā halāl wa-hādhā harām). The correct wording is “this is lawful and that is unlawful” (takūna hādhā halālan wa-hādhā harāman), as at 21/255.
11 - P. 425: “for it is the heart’s illumination and discernment.” The correct wording is “for it produces illumination of the heart and discernment,” as at 21/256.
12 - P. 426: “a sixth quality.” The correct wording is “a fifth,” as at 21/257.
13 - P. 426, in the passage: “The servant is recompensed for his deeds with something of the same kind as his deeds. [Thus, for lowering his gaze from what is forbidden, Allah compensates him with something of the same kind that is better than it], thereby releasing the light of his inner sight.” The bracketed passage is missing here but appears at 21/257.
14 - P. 426: “and docile mules clattered along carrying them.” The word dhulul (“docile”) is an interpolation, as indicated by 12/257.
15 - P. 427: “and explaining the Creator’s distinctness.” The correct wording is “and the Creator’s distinctness from creation,” as at 21/258.
(1) Meaning taking pleasure in touching a beardless youth.
